It’s no secret that many of us find the idea of dental treatments unsettling, and we may even feel quite a bit of anxiety once we sit down in the chair. We understand this anxiety and offer remedies before certain procedures to help prevent uneasiness and help you to feel comfortable.

Nitrous Oxide, more commonly referred to as “Laughing Gas”, is one option of sedation dentistry that helps put patients at ease before a dental procedure. This form of sedation dentistry is referred to as Oral Conscious Sedation because Nitrous Oxide does not put patients to sleep, and patients are able to see and hear perfectly fine during treatment as well as respond to the dentist accurately. This is unlike other forms of IV sedation dentistry in which patients have IV medication injected into them with needles; the experience is much more calm and comfortable. Patients will take a few short breaths into a covered mask, and after a couple minutes will start to feel lightweight and relaxed. The effects of the gas will wear off soon after the mask is removed and will not cause any long term disorientation.

“I have anxiety about going to the dentist, so I put off going for a long time. I finally went to see Dr. Alaswad when I had been suffering from constant tooth pain and couldn’t bear it any longer. I ended up needing a root canal procedure.”

– Emily

It had been years since Emily had seen a dentist because of her anxiety. When she made her appointment, we could tell she was anxious and explained to her the option for sedation. We use Nitrous Oxide, commonly known as “laughing gas,” to prevent uneasiness and help patients feel more relaxed during dental procedures.

“To be honest, I was a little skeptical of the laughing gas. I thought it was going to put me to sleep and make me out of it, but I was surprisingly alert and was able to answer all of Dr. Alaswad’s questions. I took a few deep breaths through a mask and within a few minutes I already felt more relaxed.”

This is a great option for anyone who suffers from anxiety about dental procedures. It is non-invasive (unlike IV sedations) and will get you back to normal quicker. The sedation wears off soon after the mask is removed. “I’m so thankful Dr. Alaswad gave me the option for sedation. It allowed me have a pleasant experience at the dentist and helped me realize I can face my fears. It won’t be years before they see me at the dentist again!”
